Tax Day Countdown 2025: Important Business Tax Filing Deadlines & Must-Know Due Dates

Whether you're the type to have everything squared away months in advance or you thrive on the thrill of the deadline, there’s one question that comes for every business owner sooner or later: “When are my taxes due?”

Good news—we’ve got you covered. No digging through IRS websites, no scrambling at the last minute. Here’s your cheat sheet for all the key tax deadlines this year—from federal income tax filings to estimated payments and everything in between. Save it, bookmark it, and most importantly, don’t ignore it. (The IRS has a long memory.)

Key Tax Deadlines for Businesses

January 31, 2025 – Forms W-2, 1099-NEC & FUTA Tax Due

  • If you have employees, this is the deadline to send W-2s to them and file them with the Social Security Administration.

  • If you hired independent contractors, this is also when you must file 1099-NEC forms for payments of $600 or more made in 2024.

  • File Form 940 to report your Federal unemployment (FUTA) tax for 2024. Also, ensure to deposit your FUTA tax liability if it’s over $500.

Ursa Tip: If you're still tracking payments on a spreadsheet, it’s time for an upgrade. A streamlined payroll and bookkeeping system makes this way less of a headache—think QBO for bookkeeping and maybe Gusto for payroll.

March 17, 2025 – S Corp & Partnership Tax Returns Due

  • S Corporations (Form 1120-S) and Partnerships (Form 1065) must file their 2024 calendar year tax returns or request an extension by this date.

  • If you need extra time, you can file for an automatic six-month extension using IRS Form 7004, but don’t forget—extensions give you more time to file, not to pay.

Ursa Tip: If you’re an S Corp or Partnership and this date snuck up on you, don’t panic. File the extension, but make sure you still estimate and pay any taxes owed to avoid penalties.

April 15, 2025 – The Big One (Tax Day!)

  • The deadline for C Corporations (Form 1120) and Sole Proprietors (Schedule C with Form 1040) to file 2024 tax returns.

  • It’s also the due date for the first quarterly estimated income tax payment for 2025.

Ursa Tip: If you’re self-employed or running a pass-through entity, the IRS expects you to pay taxes throughout the year—not just in April. That’s where estimated tax payments come in (more on those below).

April 30, 2025 – FUTA Tax Deposit Due

  • If your FUTA tax is $500+ through March, now’s the time to take care of that deposit.

Ursa Tip: FUTA taxes might not seem like a big deal, but they add up fast. Seek help from outsourced tax accounting professionals now, so you’re not scrambling (or paying extra) later

June 16, 2025 – Q2 Estimated Tax Payment Due

  • If you’re required to pay estimated taxes for 2025, this is the due date for your second installment.

Ursa Tip: If your income fluctuates, don’t just copy-paste your last payment. Take a minute to review your financials (or better yet, let us do it for you) to avoid overpaying or underpaying.

July 31, 2025 – FUTA Tax Deposit Due

  • Time to deposit your FUTA tax owed through June if it’s more than $500.

Ursa Tip: Don’t let quarterly FUTA deposits fall off your radar. A good bookkeeping system will keep these deadlines from sneaking up on you.

September 15, 2025 – Q3 Estimated Tax Payment Due

  • The third installment of estimated taxes is due for self-employed individuals and businesses making quarterly payments.

Ursa Tip: By now, if your estimated payments have been off-track, you still have time to adjust before year-end. Staying ahead of this can prevent a big, painful bill in April.

October 15, 2025 – Extension Deadline for Individuals & C Corps

  • If you filed for an extension back in April, this is your last chance to get your tax return submitted.

Ursa Tip: Extensions are great for breathing room, but don’t let this date sneak up on you. The closer you get to year-end, the less fun it is to scramble for last-minute tax prep.

October 31, 2025 – Time to Handle That FUTA Deposit

  • If you owe more than $500 in FUTA tax through September, it’s time to make that deposit.

Ursa Tip: Automate it, schedule it, or let us take it off your plate. Either way, make sure it gets done—because the IRS doesn’t do “grace periods.”

December 15, 2025 – Q4 Estimated Tax Payment Due

  • The final estimated tax payment for the year is due—your last chance to stay ahead before tax season rolls in.

Ursa Tip: Don’t wait until the holidays to handle this. Get it squared away early so you can enjoy the season without thinking about the IRS

December 31, 2025 – Last Chance for Tax-Saving Moves

  • Any year-end tax strategies—like making deductible purchases, setting up retirement contributions, or adjusting payroll—must be done before the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve.

Ursa Tip: December isn’t just for holiday sales—it’s also prime time for tax planning. If you’re eyeing deductions or retirement contributions, make your moves before the year closes.
